Overview

If you want to work as a dentist in Australia, the first question is: Is your qualification recognised by the Dental Board of Australia?

If your qualification is recognised and you meet the Board’s registration standards, you may be able to apply for general registration directly. If your qualification is not recognised, the usual route is the Australian Dental Council (ADC) assessment process. Some practitioners may also be eligible for limited registration for specific supervised roles.

Main Routes to Practise

1) Direct general registration

If you hold a qualification the Dental Board considers substantially equivalent to an approved qualification, and you meet the Board’s registration standards, you may apply for general registration.

  • No ADC exam pathway needed if already recognised
  • Still must meet English and other Board standards

2) ADC assessment pathway

This is the main route for most overseas-qualified dentists whose qualifications are not recognised.

3) Limited registration

Dentists who are not qualified for general registration may in some cases be eligible to apply for limited registration, usually for specific supervised roles or public-interest positions.

Important: registration eligibility and migration eligibility are not the same thing. The ADC also provides a separate skills assessment service used for migration purposes.

New ADC candidates start the dentist assessment process through ADC Connect.

Complete the initial assessment

This checks your qualifications and determines whether you are eligible to sit the written examination.

Pass the written examination

This is a two-day exam that tests the application of knowledge to clinical practice.

Pass the practical examination

This is the final stage of the ADC process and assesses practical clinical skills over two days.

Apply for registration with the Dental Board

After you meet the pathway requirements, apply through Ahpra and satisfy the registration standards.
